Tour This Hip Tiny Home on Wheels

And find out why this couple traded square footage for simplicity and freedom.

You may have seen Alex and Jon, a Virginia-based husband-and-wife team, on Instagram under the handle @madefreeco. There you’ll find their cozy, inviting style and inspiring insights to life in a camper. (And now soon, a van!) They shared a peek inside their tiny home on wheels with us, and it’s full of stand-out small-space ideas. Learn a little more about the couple and their home below, and be sure to take a peek through the before photos.

Converting to Camper Life

In 2016, instead of having an expensive wedding the couple decided to spend three months traveling the U.S. in a 19-foot camper. Alex says this is the event that changed their lives and helped them realize how much they valued freedom and adventure. Now, they live full-time in a 250 square-foot camper.

The Cost of Camper Life

Alex says the renovation of their space has cost them about $5,000 so far. Not afraid of a little risk, Alex says they bought the camper sight unseen, for $3,000. From there, the remodel included updating the floors, paint, and adding furniture, and took six months total.

Creative Design in a Camper

“Our style has been a reflection of our heart and inspiration from our travels out west. The reds, oranges and desert vibes were inspired by our favorite states including Utah, Arizona, South Dakotah and Wyoming,” Alex says. “The greens, wood and pops of blue are inspired by Glacier National Park in Montana and parts of Oregon and Washington. Whenever we are chillin' in the camper sipping on a Moscow Mule we are instantly transported to our favorite places and memories.”
