Robbin Obomsawin photographed this cabin that sits up on an embankment on a 3-acre island in Smith Falls, Ontario.
The structure is only 14x17 feet, yet it can sleep five people comfortably. It has a small buffet kitchen and a view to the water below that seems never-ending. There is no bathroom, just an outhouse … but it also has a view!
Robbin, of Beaver Creek Log Homes, is also the builder of this retreat on the water. She sure knows small cabins. In fact, she wrote a book on the topic: “Small Log Homes.”
This particular 500-square-foot cabin is known as the Snapping Turtle model. It resembles a prairie-like cottage.
The front porch details add flair to the otherwise simple design. Not included in the square footage is a 120-square-foot porch.
The logs that make up the cabin are of local eastern cedar. These particular trees do not grow very large on the eastern coast, so it took 21 "rounds" (courses of logs) to create the 11-foot-tall walls of this cabin.
The second floor loft has a "web" truss framed with glass that creates another great view to the lake.
