Instructions
Step 1: Collect Materials
Cut eight cords measuring 12 ft long and 2 cords measuring 5 ft long. Then, evenly thread the longer eight cords through your brass or metal ring. Make sure the ring is sturdy enough to hold the weight of your plant!
Step 2: Wrap Your Cords
Hold the cords about 3 in from the loop. Take the 5ft cord and hold it alongside the folded cords, with about ¼ in tail above your grip. Make a loop with the longer section, making sure to keep your tail in place.
Step 2: Wrap Your Cords (cont.)
Wrap the looped cord around the back of the grouped cords. Make sure not to wrap the cords too tight. You will want some wiggle room to work with! Wrap the cord 13 times, then thread the end through the loop you created on the bottom of the wrap. Pull the tail at the top until the loop is in the middle of the wrap. Trim off any excess cord.
Step 3: Begin Your Basket
Divide your cords up into four equal groups (there should be four cords in each group). Measure 11.5 inches down from the wrap and make an overhand knot. Repeat for the three remaining groups
Step 4: Half Knot Twists
Spread out your four pieces of cord under the knot. Fold the leftmost cord over the center two and under the rightmost cord. Tighten the knot directly below the overhand knot. This is a half knot.
Step 4: Half Knot Twists (cont.)
Make a total of 30 half knots, and tie an overhand knot directly below the twist. Repeat this step with the three remaining cord groups.
Step 5: Finish Your Basket
Pair the two leftmost cords from one group with two rightmost cords with the neighboring group. With your four cords, create a half knot.
Step 5: Finish Your Basket (cont.)
After making a half knot, make a backwards half knot. Start with the rightmost cord and fold it over the middle and under the leftmost cord. Thead the left cord behind and through the loop and tighten.
Step 5: Finish Your Basket (cont.)
Together, the half knot and backwards half knot create the square knot. Repeat once more for a total of two square knots. Repeat this step for the remaining groups. Make sure to pair the leftmost cords from one group with the rightmost cords from the neighboring group. This will form the base of your basket.
Step 5: Finish Your Basket (cont.)
Secure the base by creating another wrap (refer to Step 2) on the bottom. Trim the excess cord to your desired length and add beads for a bit of flair. Create an overhand knot at the bottom of each cord to secure any beads in place.
Tada!
After following these easy steps, you can have your very own macrame plant hanger. What will yours look like?
