My Cabin: Toad Hollow

We own a three-acre piece of property with a 1928 Tudor home that’s surrounded by gardens, including a path that leads to a semi-hidden cabin. From what we know, the previous owners built the cabin in the late 1940s or early 1950s. The wife had grown tired of her husband taking off to a cabin in Pennsylvania with his friends, so they built one of their own. To get to the cabin, you have to pass by a two-tiered pond with fish, toads and frogs, then walk down the steps to a 60°-sloped hill.

Nicknamed “Toad Hollow” by the former homeowners, the cabin is located in the city limits of Akron, Ohio. It overlooks the Merriman Valley. The Cuyahoga Valley National Park and the Ohio and Erie Canal Towpath Trail are nearby.

The screened-in porch looks out through the tops of trees and offers views of the valley. From here, you can listen to quiet nature sounds, the frequent echoes of a passing train (sometimes a rare steam engine), and occasional firework celebrations. During the evening, the warmth and bouquet of wormy chestnut walls and ceilings and maple floors, along with the flicker of light from candles and the fireplace, create a peaceful shield from cold blowing winds and coyote yelps.

Most important are the memories made with family and friends: pancake breakfasts, visitors from India and Europe, get-togethers with our grown children and their friends, many family celebrations, and quiet times of solitude.
CLOSE TO HOME – During a short walk from the primary house to the cabin, visitors may glimpse wildlife as well as a koi pond that features a natural stone waterfall (see photo below).
