Oops: My Boat's Encased in Ice

It’s amazing how fast ice forms on an inland lake.

The owners of this boat (we’ll call them T&J to protect their identities) woke up one morning to find part of the lake glassed over and their boat encased in 2 inches of ice (you can see the edge of the ice in the distance).

In T&J’s words: “It took us two hours to chip the boat free, then drag, then chip and drag, and chip and drag over to our boat launching area. Then of course we couldn’t get it on the trailer because the trailer wouldn’t break through the ice. Plus our Chevy Suburban was getting stuck because we were at a steep slope in the yard.

“So we dragged the boat up the slope (sans trailer) with a long strap and the Suburban. Then the boat was blocking the driveway so we needed a large crew to lever the boat onto the trailer to get it out of the way so we could plow snow from the driveway. We finally got the boat on the trailer – kind of, anyway – with three guys, a lot of muscle and some really long timbers for leverage.”

But here’s the really funny part: Two days later, the ice melted.
