Infusing a home with mid-century nostalgia is becoming an increasingly popular design edict, but lovers of log and timber homes have struggled with how to incorporate it within their building medium of choice. Designer Gwyntie van Tuyl Weswick has cracked the code — in under 1,150 square feet.

  1. Despite a cozy footprint, the length of the main living area is an impressive 42 feet and boasts two 14-foot-tall ceilings — one in the living room and the other in the kitchen — making the long, narrow room feel open and airy.
  2. The clear line of sight between spaces is courtesy of 6-inch-round Douglas fir posts and beams and king-post trusses with very tightly spaced support struts. The wood was left natural, and the ceiling was lightly whitewashed for added coziness.
  3. The marble-topped tulip dining table coupled with a sextet of Eames molded-plastic, acid-yellow chairs is every bit the mid-century centerpiece it was meant to be. The dining area is situated smack in the middle of the kitchen and living room. The onion-shaped glass pendant is also a nod to the era.
  4. In a small, open space like this, continuity is the key to good design, especially in terms of color. Here, period-appropriate turquoise and yellow are found in everything from the appliances to the furnishings to the lighting. This repetition creates cohesion and balance.
  5. The kitchen is straight out of the ’50s, with its retro (but brand-new) appliances and graphic area rug. But even here you get the essence of wood, with the paneled wall and log beams. Crisp white dimensional subway tile is an easy way to enhance the room’s natural lighting from above.
