In mid-June, Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) shook up the outboard engine industry by unveiling its new Evinrude E-TEC G2 engine. The reveal took place at a weekend conference in Milwaukee, Wis., which I attended on behalf of Cabin Life magazine. The event drew dealers, boat builders and media members from around the world. In the October 2014 issue, we offered a glimpse of this new engine. Here's a closer look, including a video of the engine's unveiling in Milwaukee, Wis.

Eye-catching technology

The E-TEC G2 is the first outboard engine block designed specifically for direct-injection technology. BRP claims that the direct-injection 2-stroke features the best technology for the outboard engine application.

The engine’s bold new look is likely the first thing that will catch your eye. The design has an edgy appearance like a modern superhero, as the design team drew inspiration from Iron Man and Batman when developing the look. And you can customize the engine color to match your boat. Choose from five colors for the side, top and front panels, and 14 accent colors (the Evinrude swoosh). BRP says there are 400 different color combinations to choose from.

The new Evinrude E-TEC G2 is available in 400 different color combinations, so you can customize your engine to match your boat.

Key features:

  • BRP states that the new outboard engine delivers best-in-class torque and fuel efficiency, as well as the lowest total emissions. Compared to leading 4-stroke engines, it produces 20% more torque, 15% better fuel efficiency and up to 75% fewer total regulated emissions (based on BRP internal tests).
  • Turning the outboard engine on its side, the new Starboard-Starboard design provides faster acceleration and better towing power, according to BRP.
  • Dynamic Power Steering is integrated directly into the midsection of the engine. It’s designed to adapt steering resistance to the boat application, so you get better handling and control through tight turns and rough water.
  • The Dual Axis Rigging System cleans things up by routing engine cables through one tube, giving you more useable space (up to two feet) and less mechanical mess at the back of your boat.
  • BRP’s next generation of Evinrude E-TEC engines will also offer the only 5-5-5 warranty (5-year engine warranty, 5-year corrosion warranty, and 5 years or 500 hours with no dealer-scheduled maintenance), allowing the cabin boaters in your circle to enjoy maximum time on the water.
